Who Was He?
-1838~1922
-8th and 17th Prime Minster
-Founded Waseda University
-Not from a samurai family.

What Did He Do?
-Along with Okubo Toshimichi and Ito Hirobumi, and other great Japanese leaders, Okuma Shigenobu pushed forward the Meiji Restoration.
-Was in charge of Japanese foreign affairs.
-Relieved Japanese economy by reforming the method of payment of money.
-United currency, created the national mint.

What He Stood For
-Liberty, and rights for everyone.
-Wanted to abolish Japanese feudal government, and bringing a constitutional government,
an English Parliament type of government.
-Modernizing the Japanese economy.
-Individuality, and independence of Japan from European influences.
-Opposed to Ito Hirobumi's government which had a potential of becoming an autocratic government, and wanted the people's government.
